Zaprešić is a town in Zagreb county, Croatia, population 23,125 (2001). It is located to the west of Zagreb, on the road from that city to the Zagorje region. It is part of the Zagreb metropolitan area. The big outlying residential town of Zapresic and its immediate surroundings offer a variety of attractive tourist opportunities (castles, churches, ornithological reserve). Novi Dvori, one of the most valuable and best preserved feudal farming complexes in Croatia, repr esents the main attraction. Zajarki Lake lies south of the centre, towards the Sava river. This artificial lake, created by shingle extraction, has become a popular bathing resort not only for Zapresic but also for the Zagreb population. Further to the Sava there is a special ornithological reserve Zapresic - Sava, an important nesting and rest ground for migratory birds. Grown by a forest, thick low vegetation interspersed with small portions of wetland. The motocross in nearby Savski Marof is an attractive and, for this region, especially important sports event. Rich fishing grounds on the nearby rivers Krapina and Sava and their tributaries -attract many anglers.

THE PALACE PATH OF ZAPREŠIĆ
Six palaces, many sacral monuments, churches and chapels, scenic spots and a bird reserve are the distinctive features of Zaprešić region - the northwestern "Gates" of Zagreb County and the Republic of Croatia. This region borders with the Krapina-Zagorje County and the Republic of Slovenia. It is situated between the Zagreb Mountain in the east, the river Sutla in the west, the river Sava in the south and the river Krapina in its lowlands region. Some 50.000 people live in the area that takes up 252 square kilometres. The area includes the town of Zaprešić, municipalities Brdovec, Bistra, Jakovlje, Pušća, Marija Gorica, Dubravica and Luka.
THE TOWN OF ZAPREŠIĆ is regional centre situated 17 km west of Zagreb, at 130 m above sea level. It lies on major regional road, and international railway connecting Zagreb and Ljubljana. Over 23.000 people live in Zaprešić and work in various industries including the dominating production of pottery, porcelain and glassware, chemical industry and the production of industrial gas.
BAN (VICE-ROY) JOSIP JELAČIĆ (1801 – 1859) was named Croatian Vice-Roy in 1848, and remained on this function until his death. He is remembered as the ban who abolished serfdom in Croatia in 1848. In his memory a monument was placed on the central square in Zagreb in the second half of the 20th century, work of a Viennese master Anton Fernkorn. After WW II, the monument was dismantled and removed from the square by communists. Fortunately it had been preserved and renewed in 1990 when it was brought back to the Zagreb central square that was named after him.
