KNOWLEDGE OF Yuanyang

Yuanyang is a Hani minority settlement atop a mountain in the Honghe prefecture of Yunnan province, China. It is a popular tourist destination due to the vast areas of nearby mountains that have been cultivated in to rice terraces.

The town of Nansha (New Yuanyang) lies 29km below Xinjie (Old Yuanyang), though it is positioned only slightly north, down in the Red River valley. From there, roads run west via Honghe and to the east. The closest large towns to the west are Shiping and Yuanjiang, and Gejiu is a major town to the north-east. Directly north but at a further distance lies Jianshui. To the south, the town of Panzhihua is positioned near the top of another major valley of rice-terraces. A few hours further to the south-east lies Lu Chun, another major Hani minority settlement turned modern city.
