KNOWLEDGE OF Vinderup

Vinderup is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Ringkjøbing County on the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 224 km², and has a total population of 8,035 (2005). Its mayor is Holger Hedegaard, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Vinderup.

Neighboring municipalities are Fjends to the east, Skive and Spøttrup to the north, Struer to the west, and Holstebro and Aulum-Haderup to the south. Part of its western border is defined by Venø Bay (Venø Bugt), part of the larger Limfjord which separates the main part of the Jutland peninsula from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy to the north.

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:

Handbjerg Parish
Ryde Parish
Sahl Parish
Sevel Parish
Trandum Parish
Vinderup Parish

By January 1, 2007 Vinderup municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Holstebro and Ulfborg-Vemb municipalities to form the new Holstebro municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 790 km² and a total population of 56,204.
