Vares

Vareš is a town and municipality in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, famous for the local mining activities and production of iron. It is the seat of the municipality of Vareš, and part of the Zenica-Doboj Canton and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the 1991 census, the municipality of Vareš had 22,114 residents: 8,982 Croats (40.6%), 6,721 Bosniaks (30.4%), 3,630 Serbs (16.4%), and 2,781 others (12.6%).

Due to War, the population of the area had been reduced to 13,293 residents in the 2001 census. Ethnically, the municipality of Vareš had 9,700 Bosniaks (73.0%), 3,500 Croats (26.3%), 56 Serbs (0.4%), and 37 others (0.3%).
