Valledupar (bä'-yĕ-dū-pärr): (from the place name Valle de Upar, Valley of Upar named after a legendary Native American cacique). Founded in 1550 by Spanish conqueror Cpt. Hernando de Santana, Valledupar is a city located in northeastern Colombia, between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serrania del Perija to the margin of the Guatapurí River, capital of the department of Cesar. It developed an Important agricultural, cattle raising and agroindustrial center for the region between the departments of Cesar and southern parts of La Guajira; however, it owes its high profile for being the cradle of vallenato music, played with accordion, a small drum (caja) and a scraping instrument (guacharaca), similar in role to the cajun washboard.

From the place name Valle de Upar (Valley of Upar) named after a legendary local Amerindian cacique named Upar leader of the Tupe indians (Tairona culture). The region was conquered by Spanish Ambrosio Alfinger in 1532 and later founded in 1550 by Spanish conqueror, Captain Hernando de Santana.

In 1813 the independence from Spain was proclaimed by Maria Concepcion Loperena, a wealthy land owner. In 1850 became capital of the Valledupar Province and in 1864 was elevated to capital of the Valledupar Department of the Federal State of Magdalena. In 1915, After the political and administrative division reestructuration of the Unitarian Colombian State, was proclaimed municipality of the Department of Magdalena, In 1956 was proclaimed a parish by the Catholic church and when the Department of Cesar was created in 1967, Valledupar became its capital.

Its full name is Ciudad de los Santos Reyes de Valledupar (city of the holy kings of Valledupar) because it was on the same day the three kings visited Jesus, the 6th day of January. It is a city located in northeastern Colombia, between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Serrania del Perija to the margin of the Guatapurí River. Valledupar is the capital of the department of Cesar.

Every year, at the end of April, the city celebrates a four-day festival]], the Vallenato Legend Festival to select the best accordion players and elect the accordion "king. The city also celebrates the holy week, in which many processions to venerate the Santo Eccehomo and other traditional Catholic beliefs.
