KNOWLEDGE OF Ulsan

Ulsan, a metropolitan city in the south-east of South Korea, lies on the Sea of Japan (East Sea), 70 kilometres north of Busan at the geographical location 35°33′N 129°19′E. In the past the city operated as a major center of Korean whaling, which led to its selection as the site of the June 2005 International Whaling Commission meeting.

The city hosts the K-League soccer club Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i and the University of Ulsan.

The city forms the heart of the country's industrial area called Ulsan Industrial District - the multinational Hyundai corporation has its base here. Up to 1962 Ulsan operated as a fishing port and market centre. As part of South Korea's first five-year economic plan, Ulsan became an open port. Additionally, major industrial plants and factories developed, including in particular an oil refinery, fertilizer plants, automobile production and heavy industries. The shipbuilding port Pangojin became part of the city in 1962.

The city transport department plans to build a light-rail line.
