Tinglev

Tinglev is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in South Jutland County on the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 326 km², and has a total population of 10,148 (2005). Its mayor is Susanne Beier, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Tinglev.

Neighboring municipalities are Bov, Lundtoft, and Aabenraa to the east, Rødekro to the north, and Løgumkloster and Tønder to the west. Its southern border is shared with that of Germany.

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:

Burkal Parish
Bylderup Parish
Ravsted Parish
Tinglev Parish
Uge Parish

By January 1, 2007 Tinglev municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Bov, Lundtoft, Rødekro, and Aabenraa municipalities to form a new Aabenraa municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 951 km² and a total population of 60,151 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").
