KNOWLEDGE OF Tandil

Tandil is a city in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, about 360 km away from Buenos Aires. As of the 2001 census [INDEC], it has 108,109 inhabitants.

The name of the city comes from the Mapuche words tan ("falling"), and lil ("rock"). It is probably a reference to the Piedra Movediza ("Moving Stone"), a large boulder which stood seemingly miraculously balanced on the brink of a chasm. The Moving Stone toppled on February 29, 1912. Some people thought that tan in fact meant "moving". In order to demonstrate the slight movements of the boulder, it was common practice to place bottles or some other things on its base to see them break.

The city was founded by Martín Rodríguez on April 4, 1823. In 1854 the Blessed Sacrament Church was built, and in 1887 the first theatre was opened. A year after (1888), the hospital was built. In 1974 the first university was founded, being the UNCPBA (Universidad del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos Aires).
