The picturesque (but slightly down-at-heel) town of Stung Treng is located on a high sandy bank overlooking the Mekong River, where it is joined by the Se Kong river. It is about 300km from Phnom Penh and 40 km south of the Laos border, and is the major city (and capital) of both the district and province and has a population of about 25,000 or about 30 percent of the population. This population is made up of a mix of Khmer, Lao and Thai peoples.

It has a airstrip, but currently no airlines land there.
