Sliven (Bulgarian: Сливен) is a town in southeast Bulgaria. It is a comparatively large town with 110,000 inhabitants (8th largest in Bulgaria). Sliven is famous for Bulgarian guerrillas called "Haiduti" who fought against the Ottoman Turks in the 19th century. The mayor of the city is the former football star Iordan Letchkov. In 1834 Dobri Jelyaskov established the first in Otoman empire factory and thus starting the industrial development in Bulgaria. Sliven was one of the biggest industrial centres in Bulgaria which played very important role during the Bulgarian Renaissance, a town with long-lived traditions in the textile industry, the machine-building, the glass-making, the electrotechnical аnd the food industry. The town whose region has been called "The valley of the peaches". Sliven will give you the chance to feel the spirit of history, traditions, and along with that the pulse of the contemporary dynamics and diversity. One of the most significant cultural centres in Bulgaria during the Renaissance, Sliven has preserved and enriched the cultural heritage and today offers to its citizens and visitors a lot of opportunities for cultural life. A birth place of many prominent Bulgarians who contributed to the enlightenment, Sliven gave Bulgaria many authors, scientists, intellectuals like Hadji Dimitar, Dobri Chintulov, Evgeniy Chapkanov, Ivan Siliminski and many others. The unique rocky massif, the Blue Rocks, “Sinite Kamani�, and associated national park, the fresh air and the mineral springs offer diverse opportunities for leisure and tourism.
