Skopun [skopn] (Danish: Skopen) is a town in the Faroe Islands situated on the northern coast of Sandoy.
Population: 499 (December 31, 2002)
Postcode: FO 240
Municipality: Skopunar kommuna
The Municipality Skopun consists only of this town which is the second largest on the sand island, Sandoy.
Although the area has been inhabited since the Middle Ages, the town was not founded until 1833. The people of Skopun did not possess any land but subsisted on fishing. That is why the houses are at close quarters to the water.
In 1897 the church was constructed from timber taken from the old church of Vestmanna. The first road on the Faroe Islands was built here in 1918 and connects Skopun with Sandur, the main town of the island, to the south. The harbour was built in 1926 and later extended. In 1982 it was furnished with a gate protecting the dock from the sea.
The small wood of the town was destroyed by the 1988 hurricane.
A car ferry used to connect Skopun with the capital Tórshavn. Nowadays it goes to the newly constructed port Gamlarætt on the south coast of Streymoy. In October 2004 a feasibility study for a tunnel from there to Skopun was commissioned. This 9 km long tunnel would be part of the land crossing to Suðuroy which is a long term plan.
