Santa Ana is the second most important city in El Salvador, located at 64 kilometers west from San Salvador, the capital city. Santa Ana has approximately 250,000 inhabitants and serves both as the capital of the department of Santa Ana and as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name.
Many fine examples of Spanish colonial architecture can be found in the city:
Catedral de Santa Ana (Santa Ana's Cathedral)
Alcaldía Municipal (Santa Ana's City Hall)
Teatro de Santa Ana (Santa Ana's Theatre)
A major processing center for El Salvador's sizable coffee industry is located near Santa Ana.
Currently, the mayor of Santa Ana, Orlando Mena, is from the FMLN or the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, the main left-wing political party. Mena was reelected in the national elections of March 2003.
