Before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores, the Huarpes Indians inhabited this area.
San Juan de la Frontera was founded on June 13, 1562 by Juan Jufré at the shore of the San Juan River. In 1593 a flooding reached the town, for what it was moved 2.5 km South to its current location.
Probably the most important son of the city is Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, whose birth house was turned in 1910 into a National Historic Monument by president Roque Sáenz Peña
On January 15, 1944 an earthquake seriously damaged the city, that had to be reconstructed, killing around 10,000 people. A second one of 7.4 ML stroke it 80 km northeast of the city on November 23, 1977, producing some damage to the city, but killing 65 persons in the province.
