Punta del Este is a popular vacation spot on the southern tip of Uruguay, southeast of the town of Maldonado and about 140 km east Montevideo. The place is considered to be the border between the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean. This is why it's one of the only beach resorts in the world (if not the only), to have 2 different kinds of beaches. One called the "Brava" which has waves, ideal for sufing, and one called "Mansa", with no waves, ideal for young kids, families and sports such as windsurfing and skiing.

Its beaches are lined with large numbers of high-rise buildings and hotels, and it has become a major vacation spot for people from different countries all over the world with about 600,000–700,000 people visiting the city yearly.

Punta del Este can be regarded as "the Saint-Tropez of Latin America", since it has become a playground for the rich and famous of Southern South America, mainly Argentinians, local Uruguayans, Paraguayans and Brazilians.

Originally a small fishing town in a peninsula jutting into the South Atlantic, Punta (as it is affectionately called), is now a thriving international resort, stretching over several miles of coastline. The population of the summer resort can get as high as 400,000 during high season (mainly the month of January).

Punta del Este is served by an international airport located near Laguna del Sauce, on the outskirts of the resort, which opened in 1996.

This famous beach resort has different allocation options, ranging from luxurious 5 star hotels and houses or apartments for rent, to camping.

Among the various day-time activities one can find are visiting the beaches, watching fashion shows performed at the two beaches, practicing several sports as sailing, surfing, kite surfing, motorsports, hangliding, horseback riding, etc. Also, multiple tournaments take place during the summer, such as a rugby 7 a side tournament, as well as golf and tennis tournaments.

Punta del Este is known by South Americans as a safe place filled with night life. Especially in January and February, when lots of people can be seen walking at night up until the morning hours, going to different pubs, discos, night clubs, cinemas, theaters, music concerts and casinos. These tourists usually come from Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil, but one can also see tourists from Europe, the United States and other parts of the world.
