A small mining community at the tender age of 50, the town of Murdochville is learning to live without the stacks of Mines Gaspe. The mine closed in 1999 leaving the town to fight for survival. After several close calls, the small town has decided to fight back and turn around the economic uncertanties that fell onto the town. The creation of several large windmills projects along with the deversification of the local economy; Murdochville will have a fighting chance!
Murdochville also laid the ground works for several of the large unions battles and ideas that exist today. Workers in Murdochville fought for their rights in 1957 which led to the adoption of several new laws and rights for unionized workers in la Belle Province.
