Meiktila is a town in Mandalay Division, Myanmar; its population is 252,305 (1901), and it is located at 20°53'N, 95°53' E.
It is situated on the banks of magnificent Lake Meiktila, an ancient irrigation and drinking water reservoir, and at the junction of the Bagan-Taunggyi, Yangon-Mandalay and Meiktila-Myingyan highways.
Meiktila lake is artificial, and according to Burmese legend was begun 2500 years ago by the grandfather of Gautama Buddha. It is 7 mile long, averages half a mile broad, and covers an area of 3.5 sq. mile.
Meiktila also has a military airfield and it has been a good military base since colonial time because of its location at the junction of main highways.
