Kumlinge

KNOWLEDGE OF Kumlinge

Kumlinge is a municipality of Åland, an autonomous territory of Finland.

The municipality has a population of 399 (2005) and covers an area of 96.59 km² of which 0.31 km² is water. The population density is 4.0 inhabitants per km².

93.5 per cent of the population is Swedish-speaking, 4.8 per cent is Finnish-speaking and 1.8 per cent speak other languages.

The first visitors of Kumlinge were Vikings who stopped by to these islands during their voyages. Kumlinge means rocky passage. The first permanent residents came in the 13th century. According to the taxrolls from the 16th century there were about a dozen houses on the island. These people were mostly farmers and fishermen. In the 20th century the population of Kumlinge has slowly started to decline.

The church in the village is dedicated to St. Anne and dates from the 15th century. There are two farm museums in Kumlinge: Hermas museigård and Sjölunds gårdsmuseum. There is also a memorial stone in Fälberget which is dedicated to the war of 1808 when a Russian battalion was defeated in the village of Kumlinge. The old post route also goes through Kumlinge.
