KNOWLEDGE OF Inverell

Inverell is a town in the north of New South Wales, Australia. The name derives from the name of Mr. McIntvre's estate. The word is of Gaelic origin, and signifies "The meeting of the swans"; from "Inver a meeting place, and "Ell", a swan. The McIntyre and Swanbrook rivers join here.

Inverell is located on the Gwydir Highway on the western slopes of the New England highlands.

The Inverell district is in an agricultural region, and there are also some minor mining activities. Inverell is known for its sapphires, contributing to the majority of Australia's sapphire production.

The Inland Fishing Festival is held every year at Copeton Dam, the district's main water supply. Amazingly, this man-made dam holds three times the capacity of water as Sydney Harbour, and as a result, holds quite a lot of fish. It is so large that when it is below 3% of its capacity during drought, it still has enough water to supply the town for up to ten years without water restrictions.
