Ibadan is the largest city and the capital of Oyo State in Nigeria. It is situated 78 miles inland from Lagos. It has a population of around 3,500,000. Local industries include food processing and cigarette manufacture.
Ibadan was founded by the Yoruba in 1750. It became a Yoruba military headquarters in 1829 and came under British rule in 1893 as part of the Niger River Delta Protectorate. It was the largest city in West Africa for much of the twentieth century.
It is host to Nigeria's first university college, the University of Ibadan, which was founded in 1948 as part of the University of London, and the more recent City University, Ibadan.
The city is home to numerous markets (the largest of which is Dugbe Market, the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture whose grounds contain rainforests, Cocoa House (the first skyscraper in Nigeria) and the Transwonderland Amusement Park. The city also has a train station on the line from Lagos to Kano and a small airport. Ibadan has two major stadiums, the Liberty Stadium with a capacity of 40,000, and the Lekan Salami Stadium at Adamasingba, the home of the 3SC (Shooting Stars) professional football club.
Companies with bases in Ibadan include Afprint, Africola, Globacom, NTC Ibadan, Nigerian Breweries and Coca Cola. Television and radio stations in Ibadan include NTA Ibadan, Galaxy Television Ibadan, Oyo State Television, BCOS, FM Ibadan and Radio Nigeria Ibadan.
Ibadan natives of note include Bobby Ologun, a K-1 fighter who is very popular in Japan, and Sade Adu, frontwoman and lead vocalist of the popular English group Sade.
