KNOWLEDGE OF Hjørring

Hjørring is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in North Jutland County on the west coast of the island of Vendsyssel-Thy at the top of the Jutland peninsula in northern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 311.4 km², and has a total population of 35,475 (2005). Its mayor is Bent Brown, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Hjørring.

Neighboring municipalities are Sæby and Sindal to the east, Hirtshals to the north, Løkken-Vrå to the west, and Brønderslev to the south. Part of its western border is defined by the waters of Jammer Bay (Jammerbugten), and beyond it the waters of the Skagerrak.

By January 1, 2007 Hjørring municipality will, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), be merged with existing Hirtshals, Løkken-Vrå, and Sindal municipalities to form an enlarged Hjørring municipality. The new municipality will be the largest on Vendsyssel. The mayor of the four conjoined municipalities will be Finn Olesen, who like his predecessor comes from the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The name Hjørring derives from the Old Norse language and consists of two parts: Hjórr (which means a sword) and -ing (a typical ending of old Danish town names).

The town of Hjørring is the largest town on Vendsyssel and has a population of 24,789 (2004). It is one of Denmark's oldest town, and it celebrated its 750 year anniversary as a market town in 1993.

Archeological discoveries show that the area was already populated 10,000 years ago.

A major fire burned down much of the town in 1819.

There are good educational opportunities in the town, as well as a large hospital.

Dana Cup, one of the world's largest soccer tournaments, takes place in Hjørring at the end of July, with 17,000 soccer players from around the world. The tournament celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2005.

The town is also the home for the Hjørring Revue (Hjørring revyen), a summer revue that has been a part of Hjørring's entertainment life since the 1920's.
