KNOWLEDGE OF Hillerød

Hillerød is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Frederiksborg County in the north part of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 133 km², and has a total population of 37,291 (2005). Its mayor is Nick Hækkerup, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Hillerød.

Neighboring municipalities are Karlebo and Fredensborg-Humlebæk to the east, Græsted-Gilleleje and Helsinge to the north, Skævinge to the west, and Slangerup and Allerød to the south.

By January 1, 2007 Hillerød municipality will, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007), be merged with existing Skævinge to form the new Hillerød municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 191 km² and a total population of ca. 43,337. The new municipality will belong to the new Region Hovedstaden ("Capital Region").

Frederiksborg Castle The most well-known monument is Frederiksborg Palace, which was for a long time the seat of the Danish kings. The palace is open to the public and houses the Frederiksborg Museum. It is also surrounded by a large baroque garden.

5 miles north of Hillerød is another castle, Fredensborg Palace, the summer residence for the royal family. The Palace and the Palace Chapel is usually open to the public for guided tours in July. During the same period the Orangery and Herb Garden can be visited.

The Town Museum (Bymuseet) contains a permanent exhibition regarding the history of Hillerød.

Æbelholt Klosterruin (The monastery ruin of Æbelholt) is a site that containing the ruins of the largest monastery in the northern countries that belonged to the Roman Catholic monastic order, The Augustinians. The site also contains a museum regarding its history. The monastery was founded in 1175 by a French augustine monk named Vilhelm. He was summoned to the task by the Danish archbishop and statesman Absalon. After the reformation in 1536 when Protestantism was introduced in Denmark, the monastery lands transferred to the state and the buildings were torn down. A part of the stones where later used in the construction of Frederiksborg Palace.

Esrum Kloster (The monastery of Esrum) is a Cistercian monastery dating from 1151 with a permanent exhibition about the Cistercians and a restaurant under the vaults. Neighbouring the monastery is Esrum Møllegaard, a Nature and Environmental Centre of ecology.
