KNOWLEDGE OF Gråsten
Gråsten is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in South Jutland County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 57 km², and has a total population of 7,256 (2005). Its mayor is Bendt Olesen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
The municipality's main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Gråsten. Other towns in the municipality are Adsbøl, Kværs-Tørsbøl, and Rinkenæs.
Neighboring municipalities are Sundeved to the northeast, Lundtoft to the north and west, Bov to the southwest, and Broager to the southeast, albeit separated from the municipality by the waters of the Flensborg Fjord leading into the Baltic Sea. The narrow strait between the municipality and Broager is the Egern Strait (Egernsund). Most of its south and eastern borders are defined by the waters of Flensborg Fjord.
The Egernsund Bridge, which crosses over the Egern Strait, connects the municipality at the town of Gråsten with Broager municipality at the town of Egernsund.
The municipality was created in 1970 due to a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:

By January 1, 2007 Gråsten municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be combined with existing Augustenborg, Broager, Nordborg, Sundeved, Sydals, and Sønderborg municipalities to form the new Sønderborg municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 499 km² and a total population of 49,886 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").
