Fakse

KNOWLEDGE OF Fakse

Fakse is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Storstrøm County in south Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 147 km², and has a total population of 12,243 (2005). Its mayor is René Tuekær.

The main town and site of its municipal council is the town of Fakse.

Neighboring municipalities are Stevns to the east, Vallø to the north, and Rønnede to the west. To the south is Fakse Bay (Fakse Bugt).

By January 1, 2007 Fakse municipality will cease to exist, due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Haslev and Rønnede municipalities to form the new Faxe municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 406 km² and a total population of 34,313 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
