Designated a city on October 1, 2000, the former town of Cold Lake was created through municipal amalgamation on the same date in 1996 when Grand Centre, Medley and civilian areas of CFB Cold Lake were merged.
Formerly known as Cold Lake Beach, the name Medley was adopted during the early 1950s during a period of rapid growth at a time when RCAF Station Cold Lake was under construction.
The city is situated in Alberta's "Lakelands" district, 280 km northeast of Edmonton, near the Alberta-Saskatchewan interprovincial border. The area surrounding the city is sparsely populated and mostly controlled by the Canadian Armed Forces through the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR), which is used by aircraft operating out of CFB Cold Lake.
