Cidade Ocidental is located in central Goiás state, Brazil. It is part of the greater Brasília metropolitan area (entorno) and had a population in 2000 of 40,377. It was founded as a municipality, being dismembered from Luziânia, in 1993. The total area of the muncipality is 389.8 kmª.
Cidade Ocidental is the case of a community formed by the need to give inexpensive housing to the lower and lower-middle sectors in the Federal District. With no more housing available inside the District new communities have sprung up in neigboring Goiás. The city, with poor infrastructure and serious budgetary problems, makes up an urban sprawl extending for more than 40 km. from Luziânia to the limit of the Federal District, where rules for construction are more rigid. A neighboring city created under the same conditions is Valparaíso de Goiás.
