Bucaramanga is the capital of the department of Santander, Colombia, fifth city in terms of importance in that country, and seventh in terms of population, Bucaramanga is one of the fastest growing cities in Latin America.
This city exports mainly honey, fruits, meat, eggs, and timber. In addition, there is an important growing manufacturing industry. The city is the base of the Colombian Petroleum Institution (ICP) and the Colombian Natural Gas Company (Ecogas).
Bucaramanga is located in a plateau in the Cordillera Oriental of Los Andes. The city is located at 7°08′N 73°08′W. Bucaramanga's metropolitan area includes the towns of: Girón, Piedecuesta and Floridablanca. The town of Lebrija where Bucaramanga's airport is located is also nearby.
Bucaramanga has a municipial area of 165 km² and is located at 959m over the sea level. The average temperature of 26°C (82ºF) with an average humidity of 65%.
Bucaramanga is also known as the "Ciudad de los Parques" ("The City of the Parks") and "Ciudad Bonita" ("Pretty City"). The city is served by one transportation terminal and the Palonegro Airport, which is located 5 miles west of downtown.
In January 20, 2006, Colombian company Telecom launched WiMAX, thus becoming the first city in Colombia, and the second in Latin America to have it.
Many important personalities from Colombia are from Bucaramanga: such as Luis Carlos Galán(rip)presidential candidate murdered by Pablo Escobar in 1989; and (former presidential candidate) Horacio Serpa.
