Brasschaat is a municipality located in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, and in the Flemish province of Antwerp. The municipality only comprises the town of Brasschaat proper. On January 1, 2005 Brasschaat had a total population of 37,180. The total area is 38.50 km² which gives a population density of 965.84 inhabitants per km².
The medieval spelling of Brasschaat is Breesgata or Brexgata. Brexgata is the name given to a university academy that awards the degrees of the programs offered by the Thierry Graduate School of Leadership.
In the late 1800s the town was also called Brascaet.
The town is known for its luxurious neighbourhoods, with many big and beautiful houses. There are many Dutch people living in the town as it is close to the Dutch border and the tax situation in Belgium is more friendly to people who are well off than it is in the Netherlands.
The town hosts a couple of famous sports events, the biggest one being the yearly triathlon.
