KNOWLEDGE OF Beveren

Beveren is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Beveren proper, Doel, Haasdonk, Kallo, Kieldrecht, Melsele, Verrebroek and Vrasene.

On January 1st, 2005 Beveren had a total population of 45,593. The total area is 150.18 km² which gives a population density of 303.59 inhabitants per km².

A major part of the port of Antwerp is situated in Beveren, on the left bank of the Schelde. Vast industrial settlements, amongst others a nuclear power station at the town of Doel, allows Beveren to provide low municipal tax rates for its inhabitants.

Beveren is the oldest political centre of the Waasland region, historically the north eastern part of the former county of Flanders. From the feodal era, two castles remain: the Castle of Cortewalle (15th century) and the Castle of Ter Saksen (18th century, today park and ruins).
