Bardere (also spelled as Baardhere, Baardhere) is one of the oldest settlements in the interior of the country. It was founded in 1776 as the site and the center of the oldest and renowned Jamaa. Jamaa is a religious establishment headed by a sheikh and committee that is open to all community members following their guidelines and whose members support each other and engage in coordinated economic and social activities. From its inception Bardere was intended to be a center and ideal place for religion, economic development and social justice.
