Alfenas is a Brazilian city and municipality in southern Minas Gerais state. As of 2004 its population is estimated to be 74,272 and the area of the municipality is 849Km2. It is served by highways MG 179, BR 491 and BR 369. The distance to the state capital of Belo Horizonte is 335 km.
One of Brazil's largest artificial lakes, Furnas is located scant kilometres away to the north.
It's known to be a great coffee producer and exporter, having the largest continuous coffee farm in the world: "Fazenda Conquista". UNIFI (A large textile industry) has a factory in Alfenas. The elevation is 882m.
It has two universities: Universidade Federal de Alfenas (Unifal) and Universidade de Alfenas (Unifenas).
