KNOWLEDGE OF Alboraya

Alboraia is a town very close to the city of Valencia, Spain.

Originally a farming community, Alboraia has grown in the last decades following the development of the metropolitan area of Valencia. Better transport communications (including 2 stations of the Valencia metro system : Palmaret and Alboraia), urban exodus from the city and foreign immigration have increased the population from 11,267 (1986) to 18,656 (2002 census). Of these 58.84% declared themselves to be Valencian speakers.

In 1994, 45.8% worked in the service sector, 33% in industry, 16.7% in agriculture and 3.60% in construction.

The elections of May 2005 gave the PP an absolute majority with 9 seats. Other seats were represented by the PSOE (3), SIA (Sí Alboraia - Yes Alboraia (2), UnioValencia (1), BLOC-EV (1) and Entensa (1).

Traditional crops are based on irrigated, intensive farming. Specially important are the tiger nuts (Spanish: Chufas; Valencian: Xufes), which are used to produce the world famous horchata, a popular refreshment. The town is actually full of orxateries - bars to relax and chill out while having an horchata in the hot Valencian summers.
