Alajeró is located on the southern coast of La Gomera in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife of the Canary Islands. It is located SW of the capital San Sebastián de la Gomera on a main highway.
The population is 1,894 (ISTAC, 2004), its density is 47.6/km² and the area is 49.46 km²/4,946 ha down from 49.42 km² in 2004. The elevation is 812 m. Farmlands are in the valley areas and within the Atlantic, the mountain and the hills dominate the northern part. Its climate is mainly vegetation.
Part of the area are made up of farmlands, forests and grasslands covers much of the municipality and grasslands near the mountaintops, the majority of the population are made up of rural population, agriculture is the main industry followed by tourism. Beaches includes Playa Santiago. Alajeró also features a fish factory and a ship repair building.
Historically Alajeró used to be in the places known as Hipalán and Orone.
During the winter months, its climate is generally foggy. The inhabitants take advantage of its planting of fruits and vegetables and other crops. They are planted in November and are harvested in May. Agricultural production to this day are not as much as a few decades ago. Since the agricultural crisis in the 1960s and the 1970s, the population left, so that the smaller villages are almost abandoned. The fish factory named Playa Santiago shut down. Little prosperity are received in the municipality today and tourism is not as common as other parts of the Canary Islands, in 1999, the island airport opened.
