The name of the city consists of one character from each of its predecessors. Akishima is the result of the merger of the town of Showa (æ˜å’Œ) and the village of Haijima (æ‹?島 ShÅ?wa). The first character contributes the "Aki" to the name, and it's the first character from Showa. That character has multiple pronunciations. Aki is the kun'yomi; shÅ? is the on'yomi. The second character is the "shima" and comes from Haijima, where its pronunciation is slightly different due to rendaku.
