Aggtelek (sometimes spelled Agtelek) is a village in the county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Hungary with vast stalactite caverns, some of them of great height. The caves (Baradla-Domica cave system) are part of the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst, which is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
50 km northwest from county seat Miskolc, near the Slovakian border.
The area had been inhabited since ancient times, but after the Mongol invasion of Hungary it became deserted for a long time. Its name was first mentioned in 1295 as Ogogteluk.
In 1858 a fire destroyed the village. During World War II the front line was near, this caused further damages.
