Abbiategrasso

KNOWLEDGE OF Abbiategrasso

Abbiategrasso is a comune and town in the Italian region of Lombardy, situated in the Po valley approximately 22 km from Milan and 38 km from Pavia at an altitude of 120 m. The population in 2003 was 28,890.

The town dates from Roman times. Its name indicates that it was part of a territory known as the fat valley: a document of 1304 referring to the Habiate qui dicitur Grasso, a title which gradually became transformed into Abbiategrasso.

On 30 April 1524, the famed knight Pierre Terrail was fatally wounded by an arquebus ball in Abbiategrasso whilst defending the retreat of the French army from Italy.
