KNOWLEDGE OF Aars

Aars is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in northern Denmark, in the county of North Jutland on the peninsula of Jutland. The municipality covers an area of 223 km², and has a total population of 13,284 (2005). Its mayor is Knud V. Christensen, a member of the Conservative People's Party (Det Konservative Folkeparti) political party.

The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Aars.

Neighboring municipalities are Nørager to the southeast, Støvring to the northeast, Nibe to the north, Løgstør and Farsø to the west, and Aalestrup to the south. The municipality lies in the region known as Himmerland, a part of the Jutland peninsula.

By January 1, 2007 Aars municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Farsø, Løgstør, and Aalestrup municipalities to form the new Vesthimmerland municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 815 km² and a total population of 39,176 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Nordjylland ("North Jutland Region").
