KNOWLEDGE OF Aakirkeby

Aakirkeby. Town and former municipality in Denmark, on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.

The municipality covered an area of 186 km², and had a total population of 6,622.

This former municipality is now included in the municipality of Bornholm.

The town is situated in the middle of the south half of Bornholm, between Rønne and Nexø.

The Danish TV-station TV2 has local office (TV2/Bornholm) in Aakirkeby.

Some people would like to change Aa to Å in Aakirkeby, but it has been decided to keep the old spelling, as it has in several other towns in Denmark. An extra "spice" here is that the church tower has two roof tops, and some say it's designed to look like AA.

Aakirkeby could be translated to "Stream Church town", as Å or Aa is a stream. When speaking of the church alone, it is separated into two words: Aa Kirke.
